Dirty Harry’s 2nd Most Favorite Gun!

Excerpt from TRIGGERED’s June 3, 2020 interview with Patrick Henry III and the Auto Mag® team.  The interview is about the amazing rebirth of the Auto Mag®, a legendary pistol made famous in Clint Eastwood’s SUDDEN IMPACT in 1983, fourth of the “Dirty Harry” movies. Patrick Henry III and his intrepid team of engineers took the challenge to bring the iconic gun into the 21st Century. Here’s the report.

1970-1971

> Harry Sanford, opened the "Auto Mag Corporation" factory, in Pasadena, California. The first Auto Mag pistol shipped on August 8, 1971.

1972

> Less than a year later on May 3, 1972, Auto Mag Corporation declared bankruptcy after making fewer than 3,000 pistols.

1973 - 1982

> 6,000 more Auto Mag pistols were intermittently manufactured between 1973 and 1982 under various company names.
> Mack Bolan of The Executioner book series carried a .44 Auto Mag he named "Big Thunder" in his war against the Mafia.

1983

> The Auto Mag makes a silver screen debut in Sudden Impact. Clint Eastwood, aka Harry Callahan, immortalizes the gun and it becomes an icon of Americana film history.

1987

> Beverly Hills Cop 2, starring Eddie Murphy, features the pistol as a plot point. A movie script alleges the rounds are too expensive to manufacture, so someone must be modifying .308 rifle casings to reload for the Auto Mag.

1996

> Harry Sanford passed away leaving the control of the company to his son, Walter.

2015

> Walter Sanford sold all the assets of the company, including the name, trademark, and production rights to Auto Mag Ltd., Co.
> The pistol is a featured weapon in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, a video game produced by Ubisoft.

2017

> Capcom released Resident Evil 7 featuring the "44 Mag."

2019

> The Outer Worlds, a video game produced by Obsidian Entertainment, features the pistol with gold, engraved plating.

AUTO MAG LTD CO

Auto Mag Ltd., Co. exists to revitalize the American classic known as the .44 Auto Mag® pistol. Since 1983, gun aficionados have been waiting for a reputable company to rebirth this symbol of cinematic, firearm, and literary history. In 2015, Auto Mag Ltd., Co. answered the call. We obtained exclusive rights to the iconic firearm, namesake, and brand. We spent six years in R&D, making over twenty improvements to the pistol. These developments enhance the gun’s reliability, safety, and ease of use. Without question, we have managed to reinforce the iconic look, feel, and value epitomized by Dirty Harry himself.

In addition to rebirthing the Auto Mag, we are pleased to produce and deliver quality parts to existing owners. We take pride in helping owners renew and refurbish pistols manufactured in the initial production runs.
